The area was once called Punto de Los Arboles, which literally means “Point of Trees”: because groves of trees were not common along the Southern California coast, early Spanish explorers (1500-1700 AD) referred to this area as such. They used this area both as a landmark and as a warning that they were too close to the shore in the fog- check out:  http://torreypine.org/history2/ . It was founded as a merger with the farmers market/ agricultural fair in 1936. The race that really put Del Mar on the map was between Ligaroti and Seabisciut.
